Abstract: We present some recent developments on the development of efficient unconstrained tree tensor networks algorithms and their application to high-dimensional strongly correlated quantum systems. We present their application to the study of the interacting Hofstadter model and of open many-body quantum systems and, in particular, to the computation of the entanglement of formation in conformal field theories, resulting in the generalization of the Calabrese-Cardy formula to open systems. Finally, we present tensor network simulations of 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional lattice gauge theories at zero and finite densities, and of their confinement properties.
